Colostrum Management: Setting Calves Up for Success

Proper colostrum management in the first 24 hours of life is essential for building early immunity and setting calves up for long-term health and performance.

A strong, healthy calf begins in the first few hours of life. One of the most critical factors in early calf health is proper colostrum management.

Newborn calves are not born with the antibodies they need to fight disease. Unlike some species, a cow cannot pass immunity to her calf before birth. This means the calf relies entirely on colostrum to receive the antibodies necessary to build early immune protection. The ability to absorb these antibodies into the bloodstream is limited to the first 24 hours of life, making timely intake essential.

Maternal colostrum is the preferred source whenever possible. It contains antibodies specific to the disease challenges present within the herd, as well as protection developed through vaccination programs. This herd-specific immunity provides targeted defense during the calf’s most vulnerable stage.

It is also important to understand the difference between a colostrum replacer and a colostrum supplement. A replacer is designed to fully substitute maternal colostrum and should be administered within the first 24 hours when antibodies can still be absorbed into the bloodstream. A supplement contains lower antibody levels and is intended to support gut health after the absorption window has passed, rather than build whole-body immunity.

Effective colostrum management is one of the most impactful steps producers can take to improve calf survivability, health, and long-term performance. Paying close attention to timing, quality, and proper product selection helps ensure calves get the strong start they need.
